Experience Niagara Falls Excitement on the Maid of the Mist

The first ever Maid of the Mist was christened in 1846, a steamboat with a sidewheel and two puffing smokestacks. People from all walks of life had an incredible new way to experience the majesty and wonder of Niagara Falls, and still do to this day. Tourism became a booming industry in the mid 19th century, and in 1854 a second Maid of the Mist was built. One of the first notable passengers, but certainly not the last, was the Prince of Wales (later to be crowned King Edward VIII) who took a ride in 1860.

In 1892, the fourth ever Maid was built. This white oak boat sported double engines and stayed in commission until 1955. In 1901, Theodore Roosevelt took a ride of this majestic fourth Maid. This boat also shuttled such illustrious passengers as the Prime Minister of India, as well as Marilyn Monroe during the filming of her appropriately titled movie, Niagara. As time passed, more boats were built with more than one in commission at a time. Tourism to the Falls hit an all-time high, and people from all over the world clamored to see them from the deck of the Maid.

It was in 1996 that the Maid celebrated her 150th anniversary. During this time, the Maid was honored in a proclamation from the governor of New York, George Pataki. The gorgeous art print 'Thundering Mist' was presented, and even the US and Canadian Postal Service became involved, participating in a joint commemorative stamp event. Around this time, former president Jimmy Carter and his wife celebrated their golden anniversary with a ride on the Maid.

Today, people looking for a ride on the Maid of the Mist will either ride on the Maid VI or her twin. Both of these incredible boats carry up to 600 passengers and provide a breathtaking view of Niagara Falls that can be found nowhere else. The Maid docks in two locations in the United States and Canada. In the US, you can board the Maid at the entrance to the observation tower. In Canada, the Maid docks at the bottom of Clifton Hill. Tours are affordable, at only $11.50 USD/$14.00 Canada for adults and even less for children. Kids under five are admitted free. An average tour on this historic boat takes around twenty minutes, and is an experience you will remember for a lifetime!
